Broncos’ Heartbreaking Rally Falls Short in 26-23 Loss to Patriots
As the clock hit the two-minute mark at a cold Empower Field at Mile High, the Broncos looked like a team that refuses to give up.
Denver, who fought back from a rough 1-5 start to find themselves in the AFC wild-card race with three games left, once again dodged defeat. Down by 16 points going into the fourth quarter, the Broncos put together two impressive touchdown drives of 83 and 78 yards, nailing both two-point conversions.
On Christmas Eve, with just a slim chance of winning after a Marvin Mims Jr. fumble turned into a Patriots touchdown, the Broncos held on at 1.6 percent, according to ESPN Analytics. The fumble-return touchdown and another score from New England had put the Broncos in a tough spot.
Mims, feeling responsible for the fumble, said, “I felt like, personally, I blew it. It cost us at the end. [I’ve] got to be better, I know that.”
But surprisingly, after forcing a quick three-and-out, the Broncos’ chance of winning shot up to 70.4%, taking over at their own 39-yard line.
However, this was as close as they got to one of their biggest fourth-quarter comebacks in team history.
Quarterback Russell Wilson said, “We thought that we were going to be able to win that game. I thought everybody battled. This meant a lot to us all. It didn’t go our way.”
Despite the late-game drama, the Broncos went three-and-out, and the Patriots, after two rushing attempts, used a 27-yard catch to set up a game-winning 56-yard field goal. In an instant, the Broncos’ late touchdowns and two-point conversions became meaningless.
Chad Ryland’s 56-yard kick, making up for a missed 47-yard field goal and extra point earlier, dropped the Broncos’ playoff chances to just four percent.
Head Coach Sean Payton expressed his disappointment, saying, “Obviously a disappointing finish, a really frustrating game. Our margin for error right now is not what it needs to be, and we end up on the losing end of the game.”
The game started with a bang for Denver as D.J. Jones flattened Patriots quarterback Bailey Zappe, recovering the fumble. However, the Broncos failed to convert the opportunity into points. Later, a missed chance on a deep pass to Courtland Sutton and Sutton’s exit from the game due to a concussion added to Denver’s challenges.
Despite some mistakes, the Broncos managed to get on the board with a Javonte Williams touchdown run. However, offensive struggles, fumbles, and missed opportunities plagued their performance.
Even with an unlikely win, which seemed improbable in the fourth quarter, the Broncos would have stayed in the playoff race. Instead, they were left with a sense of disappointment over a missed opportunity.
Safety Justin Simmons said, “We didn’t play nearly well enough in order for us to win this game. I am proud of the team and the way that we fought to get to this point, but extremely disappointed in how we executed and, I guess, lack of execution in this game.”
